Sifton Celebrates Energy Star Day

At Sifton, we believe having an energy-efficient home can play a big role in helping to combat climate change. In celebration of Energy Star Day, we wanted to share a glimpse of Sifton’s ongoing commitment to energy conservation.

Leading the Way

Sifton has always strived to surpass Energy Star requirements in all of our homes. Using technologies such as high-efficiency HVAC, Low E-Argon windows, foam insulated doors and increased insulation we were able to make our homes both comfortable and sustainable. Our efforts have been rewarded with various environmental stewardship awards.

Did you know that Sifton was the first in London to design and construct a home that could completely power itself? In 2015, we unveiled London’s very first Net Zero home in Warbler Woods. The Net Zero term refers to a building or home that can generate as much power as it uses in one year. The Net Zero home is 100% energy efficient, utilizing solar power and other leading-edge technology throughout the home to minimize the draw on energy resources by maximizing the potential of natural elements such as sun, water and rain. But this was just a hint of things to come…

Stepping Into the Future

Earlier this year, we left behind our downtown office, moving to the newly constructed Corporate Office at West 5. Our new location is filled with innovative and energy-efficient features. Lighting, heating and cooling adjust automatically based on occupancy sensors and sunlight levels, and windows tint automatically to adjust to the sun throughout the day. Employees have transitioned to erasable pens and eco photocopiers that allows for paper to be used multiple times before recycling, further contributing to a more sustainable and technologically advanced way of life.

A Sustainable Community

2017 marked the beginning of a new era of sustainable living with the first block of townhomes officially opening in West 5, London’s first 100% energy efficient community. This high-tech, sustainable community exceeds both building code and Energy Star requirements, with low flow faucets, triple glazed windows and ultra-efficient heating and cooling systems among other SMART technologies used throughout the homes. Built with the future in mind, no detail was overlooked. Solar panels, electric vehicle charging stations, rainwater harvesting and rooftop gardens will be incorporated throughout the community in an effort to preserve the future through innovation, adaption and conscientious living. If you’d like to learn more about the science and innovation behind West 5, you can visit our state-of-the-art Discovery Centre to see it all first-hand.

Small changes can have a big impact

Improved energy efficiency and energy conservation not only lessens the impact on the environment, it also saves you money. Want to play a role in the environmental revolution? It’s as easy as changing a lightbulb, and Sifton wants to help. In an effort to further reduce our carbon footprint, over the course of this year we have replaced all lightbulbs in our rental suites with LED bulbs, which use 85% less energy than incandescent bulbs. In total, we have replaced close to 50,000 bulbs!

As we celebrate Energy Star Day and the many ways Sifton is committed to building energy-efficient homes and workplaces, we encourage you to give some thought to the many simple ways you can reduce energy consumption in your daily life.
