This Remembrance Day, we pause to honour the sacrifices of our veterans. We are privileged to know 28 veterans who currently call a Sifton's retirement residence home. We spoke to several residents who shared what this day means to them:
"I have attended many Remembrance Day services in Ottawa and joined my friends from the Air Force, and in the past few years I watched the service on TV and looked for my friends. This year I will be attending a service in Belmont, ON and joining my son who is also a Veteran from the Air Force." - Ron Ouellette from Longworth
"On Remembrance Day I think about all my buddies who I served with and think about the good times and the bad times, and the good times always outweigh the bad ones." - George (Mac) Maceachern from Longworth
In the past, Bob Cline honours his service alongside his fellow veterans at Richmond Woods. Bob expressed that Richmond Woods puts on a great ceremony. He believes that this day holds great significance and wishes that the world would recognize it more than just once a year.
Jim Mercer from Richmond Woods used to visit the cenotaph in Downtown Toronto during his time living there, but now he commemorates his service at Richmond Woods. Jim shared this: "I was aboard a ship and hearing protection was not provided. The crew was instructed that after the bell rang, they had a count of three to plug their ears. Holding onto a large shell, he couldn’t afford to set it down, putting others' lives at risk, so he endured the deafening cannon blast. He sacrificed his hearing for the sake of freedom."
Dorothy McCulloch from Dorchester Terrace used to dance in Army Shows. To her, Remembrance Day is "A day we acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country."
Larry Calver from Riverstone described what Remembrance Day means to him and how he honours it "Celebrating freedom that others gave their life for." and Doug MacCrone from Riverstone encourages us to "remember the fallen who gave their life for the country. They should never be forgotten."
On Remembrance Day, we honour the past, salute the present, and pledge to build a future worthy of their sacrifice. Lest we forget. ... See MoreSee Less
